ProjectSupporting Maasai Mothers - Cow Project, Tanzania

This project benefits women, abandoned or rejected, widows, women whose husbands have 'drunk' the family livelihood and many, many children.

Each woman receives a cow on long term loan so it cannot be sold over her head by any male relative. The benefits are that each woman can use the milk for herself and her children, she can sell any excess and either keep or sell the calves. She no longer relies on others for help, she becomes independent and less vulnerable.

The cow is handed over and a picture taken of the woman with the cow so that all the brands are clearly visible should any records be necessary to follow up misappropriations. The scheme is easily monitored and the benefits long term in a way that is most appropriate to the culture. The scheme is based on a contribution for the provision of one cow.

How you can help

The cost for one cow is £150. This enables us to buy a good quality milking cow of a suitable breed, ensure its health and fitness and deliver it in calf to a woman in Maasai.

Note to donors:

If you require feedback on the beneficiary of your donation, please be aware that the process of delivery of the cow can take up to six months.
